Ibn Qayyim (rh) mentions that there’s an alienation in the heart, which doesn’t go except when sitting alone and pondering.
There’s also a sadness in the heart which doesn’t go until one knows Allah and loves Him.
There’s a fire of regret in the heart, which doesn’t go except by embracing His Decree with patience, His Commandments and His Prohibitions.
And if a person was given this entire world and everything in it, this would never fill the void.
He grants Hikmah to whom He pleases, and he, to whom Hikmah is granted, is indeed granted abundant good. But none remember (will receive admonition) except men of understanding.
The people of the past have said that Hikmah doesn’t mean Prophethood. Rather, it means knowledge, understanding and the Qur’an.
Others have said that it means beneficial knowledge and righteous actions!
Tafseer in the language means to uncover something
Tafseer in the Shari’ah means explaining the Quran.
There are 5 different types of tafseer:

- Explanation by the Sahaabah
- Explanation by the students of the Sahaabah
- By the Arabic language.
Tadabbur means to ponder. Pondering over the signs of Allah such as the Moon and pondering over the Verses of the Qur’an.
Revelation occurred in the mount of Hira.
Why did the Prophet (saw) isolate himself in Hira?
To reflect, ponder and worship Allah. He (saw) was also tired of the shirk occurring in Makkah.
What can we learn from this?
That we need to spend time pondering and thinking about the signs that Allah has made clear to us so we become closer to Him. To also think about our day in terms of sins we have committed.
Having alone time helps to accomplish this.
The Prophet (saw) would spend time pondering so we ponder too over sins and so on daily.

Try to do muhaasaba everyday. This is taking account of oneself. As Umar (ra) mentioned, take account of yourself before you are taken account of.
Think about what you have done today, the bad points and repent and improve. Have you drawn closer to Allah? One of Imam Ahmed’s (rh) companions said that he was with him for 25 years and there was no day except that he improved from the previous day!
